Anaerobic treatment is conducted in the absence of oxygen. It is done by a special group of anaerobic microorganisms. During anaerobic treatment, these microorganisms utilize the organic matter contained in the raw wastewater as a source of food and energy. The microorganisms convert organic matter into new cells and biogas.
